KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo Car Malaysia has launched the Swedish marque's first pure electric offering in Malaysia - the Volvo XC40 Recharge pure electric.

This brings Volvo Malaysia a step closer to its ambition of offering a full line-up of electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030, in line with parent Volvo Car Corp's global vision to becoming a fully electric car company by 2030.

By 2025, about 75 per cent of its sales should come from the "Recharge Pure Electric" vehicles, Volvo Malaysia managing director Charles Frump said.

"Our heritage of safety and sustainability is elevated by the electrification milestones we have achieved thus far, especially here in Malaysia where we have encouraged many to adapt a more sustainable driving experience.

"Today, we bring the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric, an embodiment of everything we stand for – 100 per cent electric with zero tailpipe emissions.

"It's a true electric vehicle, designed to provide a new sustainable mobility experience," Frump said at the launch.

Available in five colours – Crystal White, Black Stone, Silver Dawn, Sage Green and the latest Fjord Blue – the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric opens for online booking on Dec 14 from 8pm and will be available for viewing at all authorised Volvo dealers in Malaysia from Dec 15.

The Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric sells for RM288,888 on the road.

Gothenburg-based Volvo wants to have a fully electric line-up by 2030 and become a climate-neutral company by 2040.

Volvo recently announced that it had joined the "Accelerating to Zero Coalition", an effort to enhance the transition to zero-emission mobility which was launched at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Volvo is also the first car maker to take up the SteelZero initiative where it aims to accelerate the transition to carbon neutrality in the global steel industry by increasing the demand for fossil-free steel.

"These efforts reflect its global ambition of sustainability and Volvo Cars intends to influence the pace of the automotive industry's transition to full electrification," the company said.

Meanwhile, Volvo Malaysia hits a milestone with the introduction of its online sales platform – the company's first-ever initiative to sell cars directly to its customers here.

The platform will be instrumental in assisting the company's nationwide retailers in delivering an outstanding Swedish luxury experience to all customers.

"Our customers' journey to owning a Volvo will be seamless from hereon, and one that is in-line with our hassle-free price. Together with our authorised dealers, the platform will enhance the buying experience of every customer," Frump said.
