THE absence of proper railings along Sungai Air Hitam near Jalan Kampung Melayu in George Town poses a danger to motorists and pedestrians using the road.

This is more so when the river is swollen during the floods.

A resident living near the river said it would be helpful to motorists and pedestrians if railings were installed.

“The authorities must not wait for a tragedy to happen before they act.

“It is advisable to install the railings quickly and carry out landscaping along the river.

“During the massive floods in November last year, those who were not familiar with the area could have slipped and fallen into the river, and even drowned.

“Luckily, nothing happened but the authorities must act fast,” said the resident, who declined to be named.

He said he did not know where to lodge complaints as he felt there was a overlapping of duties between the local council and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.

ACTIONLINE:

A Penang Island City Council (MBPP) spokesman said the council would look into the complaint and take the necessary action.

“However, this matter may come under the jurisdiction of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, hence we will refer to the department before taking action.”

The spokesman said the public may lodge reports with MBPP through a hotline or email.

The council will then direct the reports to the relevant department or agency for action.
