JAKARTA, (Indonesia) : Indonesia experienced a spike in public transport usage last Sunday (April 7), reaching 1.2 million passengers, setting a record for this year's Aidilfitri transport season, according to the country's Ministry of Transport.
Ferry transportation emerged as the preferred mode of travel, three days before the celebration, accommodating 367,031 passengers, which accounted for 31.06 per cent of total public transport users across all modes.
Ministry's spokesperson Adita Irawati said in a statement: "This marked an increase of 4.31 per cent compared to last year and an astounding surge of 1,029.29 per cent compared to regular daily movements."
In other modes, she said air transport saw an uptick with 292,855 passengers, marking a 5.11 per cent increase from last year. Similarly, road transport experienced growth, recording 249,410 passengers, indicating a 9.19 per cent rise.
Railway transport witnessed a notable surge, recording 178,616 passengers, marking a 9.94 per cent increase from last year. Sea transport also showed growth, with 93,793 passengers, reflecting a 7.17 per cent increase.
However, private transport via toll roads observed a significant decline, with 929,692 vehicles and 4.6 million people entering and exiting Jakarta metropolitan area, marking a 35.19 per cent decrease from 2023's figures of 1.4 million vehicles and 7.2 million people, Adita added.
The ministry is conducting extensive monitoring operations, covering 111 terminals, 16 ferry ports, 51 airports, 110 seaports, 173 railway stations, 42 toll gates, and 20 arterial road sections.
Together with the police and the military, authorities are currently overseeing the travel of 193.6 million people for the Aidilfitri holiday, which is an increase from 123 million people last year. — Bernama
