KUALA LUMPUR: The Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) is seeking funding from the Youth and Sports Ministry to upgrade the courts at the National Squash Centre to align with current standards.

SRAM president Gerard Monteiro said ongoing renovations at the venue only include essential upgrades such as seating, toilets, air conditioning, and roofing.

The centre has been closed since September last year.

"Given the current renovations, we intend to apply for additional funding to upgrade all the courts," Monteiro said.

"The National Squash Centre should meet current standards."

"At the recent tournament in Egypt, they used glass flooring, so we need to keep up if we are to make sure our players remain competitive," he said after SRAM's annual general meeting here today.

Monteiro said the courts at the National Squash Centre have not seen significant upgrades since the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

The ongoing renovation, initially slated for completion by September this year, has faced delays and is now expected to finish by mid-2025.
