KUALA LUMPUR: International Hockey Federation (FIH) president Datuk Tayyab Ikram extended his deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of New Straits Times sports journalist Jugjet Singh Randhawa today.

"His passing marks the loss of a titan in sports and hockey journalism, whose passion and dedication illuminated the sport for over three decades.

"Jugjet's tireless commitment to covering hockey not only informed but inspired, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of enthusiasts worldwide.

"His insightful commentary, profound understanding, and unwavering support for the game enriched the fabric of hockey journalism.

"Jugjet's expertise transcended borders, resonating profoundly within the Malaysian hockey community and reaching far beyond.

"His legacy will endure as a beacon of excellence, guiding future generations of journalists and enthusiasts alike.

"During this time of mourning, let us remember Jugjet for the immense impact he made and the passion he brought to every aspect of the sport.

"May his memory serve as a source of solace and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him."

Jugjet died on Thursday after a long battle with cancer at the age of 55.

He leaves behind wife, Jasbir Kaur Aujla and sons, Arvin, Sanjit, Ranjit and Baljit.

In his 30 years as a newshound, Jugjet had left significant footprints on the local sports scene, especially in hockey, which he said was his passion.

Johor Hockey Association executive secretary Hashim Yusoff said Jugjet was a legendary hockey writer.

"He knew everthing about hockey from A to Z. He had covered a lot of hockey in the country and overseas."

Former national hockey player Kelvinder Singh said Jugjet always encouraged him on and off the field.

"He dedicated his life to hockey."

Family members, friends, Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) officials, coaches and former national players paid their last respects to Jugjet at his funeral in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Among them were MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal, former MHC vice president Datuk Dr S. S Cheema, former national players Datuk Mirnawan Nawawi, Kelvinder Singh and Baljit Singh and former national coaches Stephen van Huizen and Balbir Singh.

NST Group Editor Farrah Naz Karim and NST Executive Editor Sharanjit Singh also paid their last respects.
