JOHOR BARU: Johor is gearing up to replicate its success at the Malaysia Games 2022, with an ambitious target of 70 gold medals at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma 2024).

Sarawak will host Sukma 2024 from Aug 17 to 24, featuring 37 sporting events.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced a RM10,000 incentive for athletes who clinched gold medals in individual events, while each gold-winning team will receive RM20,000. Coaches will receive RM5,000 for each gold medal.

Onn Hafiz said Johor was determined to surpass its previous achievement of 77 gold medals in Sukma 2022.

Earlier, the menteri besar addressed the Johor Sukma 2024 contingent at the Johor Sukma countdown themed "Sukma 2024: The Next Chapter" at the Larkin Arena Aquatic Centre here today.

"The state government has invested much in facilities for you (athletes).

"You have about six months to vigorously train to achieve our gold medal target."

He said he was confident the athletes could exceed the target.

The Sukma 2024 will be held at various locations in Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Serian, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri.
