KUALA LUMPUR: National coaches under the National Sports Council's (NSC) Podium and National Backup programmes will receive at least a 30 per cent increase in their salaries, which will be backdated to Jan 1.

Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh today said the move is intended to improve the sports ecosystem in the country and retain talent.

"The last time a salary scale revision was done was in 2014, which is already a decade now," said Yeoh.

"If we do not revise this, we will lose out to our neighbouring countries, our coaches will leave us for them.

"This is part of our efforts to improve the sports ecosystem, including the support system."

More than 100 national coaches will benefit from the revision. Full-time coaches with level three certification, for example, will see their base pay rising from RM4,500 to RM5,900.

In addition to an increase to their base pay and allowances, they will now receive additional remuneration based on their achievements when they were athletes.

For example, coaches who had previously won medals at the Olympics or Paralympics will receive an additional RM3,500, while world championship medallists get an extra RM3,000.
