KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rugby (MR) says it is unlikely that it will bring back the Malaysia Rugby League (MRL) club 15s competition this year, unless there are sponsors.

MR honorary secretary Fahmy Jalil recently said due to limited resources, the national body would focus on organising competitions for state teams, such as the Agong's Cup (15s) and National Sevens Championships.

"We are finalising our domestic competition calendar for this year, but we do not have plans to bring back the MRL.

"Our focus is on organising tournaments for our state affiliates and this includes the Agong's Cup and the National Sevens.

"It would be too much of a burden for us to organise the MRL. At the end of the day, the same players who compete in the Agong's Cup also compete in the MRL.

"The only way the MRL can be held is if a company or organisation is willing to fund it.

"If that (backing) happens, we are willing to provide technical support to run the tournament."

The MRL was introduced in 2004 and brought together the nation's top clubs, such as Cobra, Keris Conlay, NS Wanderers, Eagles, Serdang Angels, Asas RFC and Bandaraya Dragons.

It was last held in 2019.
