KUALA LUMPUR: Sports Commissioner Suhardi Alias is hoping to see Malaysian sports associations moving forward with a clear and measurable vision this year.

Suhardi said better overall governance by sporting associations would help them attract more sponsorship, and subsequently, allow them to strengthen their programmes.

"This year, the Sports Commissioner's Office (SCO) would like to see the associations strive for capacity building, which will help them advance further," said Suhardi when contacted today.

"Improved governance will help them secure more sponsors for their activities and programmes.

"We also encourage national sports associations (NSA) to further develop and strengthen their strategic plans.

"They must be more structured and have a clear vision that is measurable.

"This is especially important for us as we prepare for the (2024) Paris Olympics, as well as Los Angeles 2028.

"My hope is that our sports will achieve more glory and make the nation proud."

Except for a few NSAs, securing private-sector sponsorship has always been difficult for sports associations, many of which are reliant on government funding.

The main focus for Malaysia at the elite sports level this year will be the Paris Olympics (July 26-Aug 11) where national athletes will be on a mission to secure the nation's first-ever gold medal at the games.
