KUALA LUMPUR: Triple jumper Andre Anura Anuar and discus thrower Irfan Shamsuddin will compete in the Adelaide Invitational (Feb 10) and Melbourne (Feb 15) in a bid to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

Sabahan Andre is currently ranked 101st in the world, and for Paris Olympic qualifying, he is 29th while Irfan is 52nd in the world.

Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) technical director John Ballard said: "Adelaide is a bronze-level meet while Melbourne Open is gold-level, which is equivalent to the Diamond League.

"Andre has a good chance to go to the Olympics as he needs to maintain top 32 by the end of June.

"Irfan competed in three competitions last year, and he needs to compete in two more to break into the top 32 by the end of June," said Australian Ballard.

Last year, Andre, 24, won gold (16.06m) at the Phnom Penh Sea Games and finished eighth (16.00m) at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Irfan, 28, from Negri Sembilan is a six-time Sea Games champion and he holds the national record of 62.55m set in 2017.

Ballard said MAF is also trying to get the two athletes to compete in high-level competitions in New Zealand.
