KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's self-funded petanque athletes won two silver and two bronze in the fourth Asian Championships which ended in Bangkok today.

Nur Ain Syuhada Asri won bronze in the women's shooting individual event and partnered Nurul Farzieana Abdul Malek, Nur Thahira Tasnim Abdul Aziz and Rabia Adawiyah Roslan to the shooting triples silver.

Muiz Ezham Rizan bagged bronze in the boys' shooting individual and silver in the triple shooting partnering Akhtar Shauqi Aini Dom, Nor Irfan Roslan and Hafzan Nizar.

Malaysian Boules Sports Federation secretary Maya Heng said they did not receive any funding from the National Sports Council (NSC) for the four-day meet.

"We wrote to NSC but they did not respond. That did not stop our petanque athletes from competing."

Malaysia were represented by eight men and four women. It cost the team RM60,000 in flight tickets, accomodation and food.

Malaysia, ranked fifth in the world, finished third behind Thailand and Cambodia. Fifteen countries took part.
