KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia won their first gold at the Islamic Solidarity Games today by coming out tops in archery.

The men's compound team of Juwaidi Mazuki, Eugenius Loh and Alang Aliff edged the Indonesians 229-228 in the final at the Saracoglu Sports Complex in Konya, Turkey.

Iran won the bronze while hosts Turkey finished fourth.

The 32-year-old Juwaidi said they are proud to win Malaysia's first gold at the Games.

"The Indonesian side were the favourites but we rose to the occasion and got the better of them by one point.

"My teammates, Eugenius and Alang, were not intimidated by our opponents in the final. Instead, they did well to deliver the points.

"It is a good win over Indonesia, and I hope to deliver another medal for Malaysia. I have qualified for tomorrow's individual final, and the gold in the team event today will definitely inspire me to finish on top of the podium," said Juwaidi, who had won two gold (individual and mixed team compound) at the Hanoi Sea Games in May.

In the past week, Malaysia have won one gold, one silver and three bronze at the Islamic Solidarity Games.

Cyclist Nur Aisyah Zubir won silver in the women's scratch race and bronze in the omnium race. Nor Sarah Adi got a bronze in women's pole vault while Eizlan Dahalan took the men's high jump bronze.
