OLYMPIC Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria hopes that Malaysia will be able to send larger contingents for future editions of the Winter Olympics.

Yesterday, Norza was joined by China's Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing at the flag handing over ceremony to Chef de Mission for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Moira Tan.

Speaking to the press, Norza said: "We are not putting high expectations as the athletes who have qualified are young, and winter sports here are still in infancy.

"It is already a milestone for Malaysian sports, but I do hope more athletes will qualify in the future Games.

"We are actually relying on individual preparation as Malaysia is not a winter country.

"But we hope that maybe later, we can look at more comprehensive ways to have a bigger contingent."

Malaysia made its debut at the Winter Olympics in 2018 in Pyeongchang through figure skater Julian Yee and alpine skier Jeffrey Webb.

At this year's edition from Feb 4-20, United States-based Jeffrey will be joined by 17-year-old fellow alpine skier Aruwin Salehhuddin.

Both Jeffrey and Aruwin had qualified on merit through the world rankings.
