Women's bodybuilding has finally muscled its way into the Sea Games. It may be long overdue but it is still "wait and see" for Lilian Tan.

The four-time world champion disclosed that she has to undergo surgery to remove a lump in her breast soon.

So, she has to go under the surgeon's knife before she can further sculpt her body.

Lilian can only decide whether to come out of retirement to participate in this year's Vietnam Sea Games once she has a clearer picture of the situation.

Lilian disclosed that she cannot afford to put off the surgery any longer.

"I first noticed the lump prior to my final appearance at the 2018 World Championships," said Lilian.

"At the time, the doctors said it did not appear to be dangerous (non-cancerous) and said that I could go on to compete and have it removed later.

"Anyway, at that time it was my last competition before retiring (2018) and I thought that we would have ample time to do the procedure later.

"But in 2019 I had kidney stones removed and that took a few months for me to recover from. I was planning on getting the lump removed early last year but then Covid-19 happened.

"Previously, the lump did not hurt but recently it has begun to cause me some discomfort when lifting weights. So I believe I cannot put it (surgery) off any longer. Health is very important to me and I have to make it a priority.

"I will be meeting with my doctor (today) for examination and consultation. I expect the procedure to be done by next week at the latest."

Lilian, who is known to be very meticulous when it comes to preparing for competitions, said there is a lot to consider before she makes a decision on the Sea Games, which will be held on Nov 21-Dec 2.

"Once the lump is removed, the doctors have to test it to see whether it is cancerous or if it is just a normal (benign) cyst.

"I am not sure at the moment how long the recovery process will take. Whatever it is, it will definitely cut into my preparation time (for the games)."

A Sea Games gold medal would complete what has already been a glittering career for Lilian.

Lilian, 47, won her final world championship title in 2018 and retired at the end of the season.

She had previously won the biennial world title in 2012, 2014, and 2016.

Since retiring, she has become a successful private coach.
