KUALA LUMPUR: Izzat Zaidi Salehan was in dominant form as he scored an emphatic victory in the CP150 category at the fifth round of the Petronas Malaysian Cub Prix Championships in Negri Sembilan today.

The Petronas Sprinta Yamaha CKJ Racing rider took the chequered flag in 14 minutes and 48.244 seconds at Dataran Seri Jempol.

Honda Yuzy Idemitsu's Azroy Hakeem Anuar (+1.771s) and Izzat's teammate Ahmad Afif Amran (+2.936s) claimed second and third.

Izzat started from pole position and did well to pull away from the opening lap.

By the sixth lap, he had already carved a three-second lead over Azroy, which he maintained until the finish.

The Selangor-born rider, who had set a new lap record in the Superpole session, was elated with his first race win this season.

"I have to thank the team for their support. It has been a perfect week for us," said Izzat.

"Afif did a lot to help me (fend off Azroy) today, and I was also able to put in good laps consistently.

"I have been waiting a long time to be on the top step of the podium, and finally today, I achieved first place."

Izzat's win puts him in the title race with 76 points for third place overall. Petronas Sprinta Yamaha Maju Motor's Nazirul Izzat Bahauddin is second on 87 points, while Afif leads the championship with 91. Azroy is fourth (62 points).

The CP125 race in Jempol was won by Onexox TKKR Racing Team's Shafiq Rasol, while Danish Aiman Zamrul (Petronas Sprinta Yamaha 31 Racing) claimed the win in the Wira KBS race.

Five more rounds remain this season. The sixth round will be held at Sepang Circuit (North layout) on Aug 6-7.
