KUALA LUMPUR: Defender Rohit was literally a hit with the India team at the Junior World Cup (JWC) on Saturday.
Going by one name only, the penalty corner (PC) specialist scored a brace in India's 10-1 win over Canada in a Group C match at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
For Rohit's team, it was their second group win and advanced them into the quarter-finals.
India's 10-1 win was the second highest - after Germany's 10-0 thrashing of Egypt - in the ongoing JWC.
Rohit was on target in the 12th and 55th minute, tallying three goals in two matches.
Arjun Lalage Aditya (eighth and 43rd) and Amandeep Lakra (23rd, 51st) each scored a brace while Vishnukant Singh (42nd), Rajinder Singh (42nd), Anand Kushwaha Sourabh (51st) and captain Uttam Singh (58th) were also on target.
Canada replied through Jude Nicholson in the 20th minute.
Rohit, who is from Dabra village in Haryana, is the son of a farmer.
Rohit, who is playing in his first JWC, said: "I'm the first from my family to represent India in hockey. My family is proud of me. My father (Udeyveer) is my number one fan."
A product of the Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy, Rohit
took six penalty corners and converted three in the JWC so far.
India coach C. R. Kumar said though his team had a slow start against Canada, they eventually won the match with a big margin.
Canada coach Geoffrey Matthews said they did well in the first two quarters but not the last two quarters.
