KUALA LUMPUR: National No. 1 amateur golfer Mirabel Ting capped off a fine debut campaign at the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA) with a tied-eighth finish.
The 18-year-old closed with a two-over 74 on Saturday at the Augusta National Golf Club, the home of the annual Masters Tournament, to conclude the 54-hole contest on one-over 217.
England's Lottie Woad, Mirabel's senior at Florida State University, was crowned the winner after shooting a 69 for a winning aggregate of eight-under 208, winning by one shot from American Bailey Shoemaker.
World No. 1 Ingrid Lindblad of Sweden finished third on 212.
Despite not mounting a strong challenge for the title on the final day, it was nonetheless a commendable performance by Mirabel.
Mirabel had already set the benchmark earlier by becoming the first Malaysian to make the cut on Thursday.
"Thank you, Augusta National. It's been a dream as a kid to be able to play in this prestigious event," Mirabel posted on her Facebook account.
"Another top-10 finish and learned a lot from this event."
With two more years left in her collegiate career, Mirabel will get to feature in at least the next two editions of the ANWA, provided she remains a top-50 ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).
Judging by the remarkable progress Mirabel is making in the US, it's only a matter of time before she becomes a top-10 player.
Following her exploits at Augusta National, Mirabel can expect to break into the world's top 15 after this week. She's currently ranked No. 17.
Established in 2019, the ANWA serves as the prelude to the Masters Tournament, taking place a week prior.
