HE may only be 10, still pretty much a kid, but Syed Muhd Syed Bakri is already harbouring hopes of representing Malaysia in golf at the Olympics one day.

Syed, who resides in Astana, Kazakhstan, with his family, showed his potential at the recent Kazakhstan Junior Championships.

He did well to reach the finals of the two-day tournament, but fell just short of the top three.

Nonetheless, it was still a remarkable outing for Syed who was competing with golfers at least five years older than him.

"I'm not too disappointed with this result as the most important thing is to be representing Malaysia," said Syed, who is the seventh of nine siblings.

"The journey is still far for me and I will have to train hard and gain experience through more international competitions.

"With the opportunity to compete in competitions in Kazakhstan and several other competitions in Europe, I am confident it will help improve my performance.

"My dream, if possible, is to follow in the footsteps of Gavin Green and Kelly Tan, and become a professional golfer."

For now, Syed's plan is to compete in international tournaments in order to gain more experience in his ambition of becoming a professional golfer.

His long term target is to qualify for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
