KUALA LUMPUR: Sports observer Datuk Dr Pekan Ramli has raised questions about the timing of the punishment imposed on Kedah for failing to clear salary arrears last month.

The First Instance Body (FIB), which operates under the Malaysian Football League (MFL), has levied an RM50,000 fine and a three-point deduction on the Super League team.

FIB said Kedah must clear their salary debts by April 20 or risk losing their licence, with the new M-League season set to start next month.

"I am questioning the timing of the punishment. It wouldn't have been an issue to delay or refrain from announcing the fine and points deduction initially," said Pekan.

"It's like adding to Kedah's burden, given the final warning to clear salary arrears by April 20.

"I'm not placing blame on MFL or FIB. There's no flaw in the punishment.

"However, it would have been preferable to wait until April 20 to assess whether Kedah can settle their 2023 salary arrears to players and officials," he added.

Pekan said MFL and FIB must stand firm and revoke Kedah's licence if they fail to meet the deadline.

The new Super League season now comprises 13 teams, with Kelantan not granted a licence due to non-payment of salaries.
