NATIONAL youth coach Brad Maloney believes his side are getting closer to perfection ahead of the AFC Under-23 qualifiers in Mongolia on Oct 25-31.

The Australian made the assessment following the 2-1 win over Super League side Penang in a friendly in Subang Jaya on Friday.

Malaysia are in Group J with hosts Mongolia, Laos and Thailand.

"We are gaining from the friendlies against senior teams in the M-League," said Maloney.

"It is good progress, but we have to implement similar determination and confidence against our Group J opponents."

In Friday's friendly, Syafik Ismail (71st minute) and Nik Akif Syahiran Nik Mat (86th) scored for Maloney's side to cancel out Penang's lead through Amer Azahar in the 22nd minute.

Maloney will finalise his 23-member squad after tomorrow's friendly against Kedah. They will head to Mongolia on Oct 20.

It is understood that Selangor have released defender Harith Haikal Adam Afkar for the assignment, while Mukhairi Ajmal Mahadi, Hakimi Abdullah, Quentin Cheng and Luqman Hakim Shamsudin will join the squad on Oct 19 after completing their senior squad quarantine.
