Many believe that the FA of Selangor (FAS) have taken a gamble by signing 28 players from the Mokhtar Dahari Academy for the new season.
Former National Football Development Programme chief executive Safirul Azli Abu Bakar said it was a huge risk for the state as there is no guarantee these players will be able to make a good transition to the professional ranks.
Safirul, who played a big role in helping the players move to the Red Giants, disclosed that only Selangor had agreed to demands from the players’ parents.
“I am not sure if any other teams had approached these players, but what I can confirm is that Selangor were one of the earliest to do so. Maybe the other teams took a wait and see approach,” said Safirul.
“This is a huge relief for a big group of parents who prior to this admitted that they were worried about their children’s future. At least they now have a team for next season.
“As far as I know, Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) had invited some parents to express their interest in these players.
“They (players), however, have already considered all offers and made a decision. We have to respect their decision.
“But on the other hand, Selangor have taken a big risk here because they do not know if these players can make the grade as professionals.”
Safirul hopes every player will be given a chance to play regularly regardless of which Selangor squad they are in.
"You have to remember that they are just 18 and not all of them will be placed in Premier League side Selangor II.
“Perhaps only the best of them will be part of the feeder team.
“There are still places in the Youth Cup and President's Cup squads for the rest of them. What is important is that they continue to play competitively.”
It is believed that the players were offered salaries ranging between RM2,000 and RM5,000 each.
