KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur Cycling Association (KLCA) coach Datuk Ng Joo Ngan rubbished claims by parents of his former charges that his training methods are outdated.

He said that despite the limited resources available to KLCA, he has consistently been able to produce quality talent capable of challenging for medals in national level competitions.

The lack of resources available to him, however, have limited his ability to provide attention to riders of all age and ability levels.

"They say I'm old school, but I still produce riders who win medals. If you speak to my former cyclists, they know what I am doing," said Joo Ngan recently.

"They (parents) don't understand cycling, they don't know about technique, or even positioning for that matter.

"I do not practice favouritism, if the rider is talented they will be selected.

"A lot of these parents who complain, their children are not that talented. Some have been training for two years but get beaten by those who have only trained six or seven months.

"What am I to do? I have to take care of our (elite) riders. You can't expect me to take care of 12 or 13-year-olds.

"Despite my age, I am still able to ride a motorcycle for 200km (accompanying cyclists) up and down Fraser Hill in Bentong. Can they (parents) do that?"

The parents recently said that although they respect Joo Ngan, 77, for his achievements in the sport over the years, he was no longer relevant as they claimed that his training methods were outdated.

They said Joo Ngan does not implement the use of power metres and heart rate monitors in his training methods, both of which are considered de rigueur in modern cycling training methods.
