KUALA LUMPUR: All the Paris-bound Malaysian shuttlers found out today who their Olympics opponents are -except for men's pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik.
The draw for the Olympic badminton events were done this afternoon by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in Kuala Lumpur. But the men's doubles draw could not be held due to a court ruling.
BWF had to postpone it following a Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) ruling.
This came about after French pair Lucas Corvee-Ronan Labar, who missed qualifying for the Paris Olympics, went to the world sports court after BWF adjusted the world rankings in April to rectify a points calculation error last year.
Corvee-Labar succeeded in their appeal as CAS ordered BWF to apply for an extra slot for men's doubles to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC agreed.
This means the Olympic men's doubles competition will feature 17 pairs instead of 16. There will be three pools of four pairs and one pool of five pairs.
The new date for the men's doubles draw has not been announced by BWF. Former world champions Aaron-Wooi Yik will have to wait to find out who their Olympic opponents are.
