KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian para shuttler Cheah Liek Hou is world champion for a record eighth time.

The 2020 Tokyo Paralympic men's singles SU5 (upper impairment) champion successfully defended his title on Sunday after seeing off his Indonesian rival Dheva Anrimusthi 21-15, 16-21, 21-15 in the final of the Para Badminton World Championships in Pattaya.

The victory is Liek Hou's eighth win over the Indonesian ace in 15 meetings.

The last time both shuttlers locked horns, Dheva came out tops, ultimately winning the Asian Para Games gold in Hangzhou last year.

Liek Hou's previous seven singles titles was won back in 2005, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2022.

Liek Hou also won the doubles title with Fareez Anuar when they defeated India's Chirag Baretha-Raj Kumar 21-17, 21-18 in the final. It was his sixth world title in doubles.
