KUALA LUMPUR: Rising doubles star Haikal Nazri has provided Malaysia's Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) squad with a significant boost by returning to full training this week.

Last week, Haikal twisted his ankle and was forced to withdraw midway through a first-round match at the Thailand Masters. It turned out that the injury wasn't as serious as initially feared.

If his injury was serious, Malaysia would have to defend their BATC men's title at Setia Alam Convention Centre with only nine players. Teams were no longer allowed to change players after the entry deadline on Jan 26.

A relieved Haikal said he is eager for his first major team event with partner Choong Hon Jian. They gained attention for their rapid rise late last year after winning consecutive World Tour titles at the Syed Modi International and Guwahati Masters in India.

"I suffered a minor ankle sprain, but it's recovering well. I'm feeling better each day and no longer need any taping on the affected part," said Haikal.

"The doctor has ruled out any major concerns, and I was cleared to resume full training this week. I'll be ready for the BATC."

Following a surprise call-up over their seniors Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, Haikal admitted he would have been devastated to miss the opportunity to play in the BATC if his injury was more serious.

He vowed that he and Hon Jian will not let the coaches down if they are fielded.

"Honestly, Hon Jian and I were shocked to find out that we were included. According to the rankings, Wei Chong-Kai Wun should have got the nod."

Malaysia are placed in Group B in the men's competition with Taiwan, Kazakhstan and Brunei. Only the top two teams will advance to the quarter-finals.

Malaysia's 10-man squad also include former All England champion Lee Zii Jia, Tze Yong, Leong Jun Hao, Eogene Ewe, and doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.
