KUALA LUMPUR: Mixed doubles Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei continued their great run by reaching the quarter-finals of the Syed Modi International in Lucknow, India, today.

The national No 2, who climbed 10 rungs to a career high No 30 in the world following their India Open second placing last week, whipped India's Dhruv Rawat-Shikha Gautam 21-14, 21-11 today.

However any chance of a rematch with Singapore's Terry Hee-Tan Wei Han, who beat them in the India Open final, will not materialise after the Singaporeans withdrew from the competition.

Instead, Tang Jie-Yen Wei, who are the second seeds, will face India's T. Hema Nagendra Babu-Srivedya Gurazada in the last eight.

There was, however, no joy for the senior-junior pairing of Chan Peng Soon-Valeree Siow as the fifth seeds withdrew from their second round match against India's Balkeshari Yadav-Swetaparna Panda. This came after the 33-year-old Peng Soon felt dizzy.

The 2016 Olympic silver medallist, however, said he did not test positive for Covid-19. They were the second Malaysian entry to withdraw due to illness after men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong pulled out on Wednesday.

In men's singles, independent shuttler Cheam June Wei reached the quarter-finals with a 21-16, 21-13 win over India's Kaushal Dharmamer. June Wei, who left the BAM setup last year, will next meet France's Lucas Claerbout.

Soong Joo Ven however r lost 21-16, 16-21, 21-23 to India's Mithun Manju nath.

Also through to the last eight were men's doubles eighth seeds Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun. The world No 65 thrashed India's Himanshu Mittal-Shubham Sharma 21-7, 21-9.
