KUALA LUMPUR: Just two days after being selected for the Malaysian Uber Cup squad, women's singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei dropped a bombshell by announcing her retirement today.

In a seven-minute video posted on YouTube page, the 21-year-old said she decided to call it quits due to health related concerns.

The two-time former world junior champion (2015, 2018) - once touted to be the next big thing in Malaysian women's singles - underwent a colectomy in 2019. Things just never looked the same for the Penang-born prodigy since then.

"Since my surgery in 2019, I have always needed a lot of medication daily and the doses have been getting stronger and stronger.

"So for the sake of health, I have decided to end my career now. There's definitely a lot of regret but it's still a long road ahead. I believe if I stay positive and work hard there'll be a chance again in the future.

"I want to sincerely thank the Penang BA and BAM (BA of Malaysia) for providing me with the opportunity and platform. I've been in the national team for seven years since I was 14.

"I'm really thankful to the NSC (National Sports Council), NSI (National Sports Institute), Tan Sri Norza Zakaria (BAM president), all my teammates, friends and fans.

"I'm really sorry for not being able to fulfil my potential and I hope that my good friends - Zii Jia and Lai Pei Jing - can continue fighting hard to complete my dream," said Jin Wei.

Despite struggling to find her form since undergoing surgery, Jin Wei reached the quarter-finals of Orleans Masters and the final of the Spanish International Challenge this year.
