CHOW Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean want to achieve what no Malaysian women's doubles pair have achieved in the past — a podium finish at the Olympics.

The pair who have done well to reach three semi-finals this year (two at the Asian Leg of the World Tour and at the Swiss Open) are among the eight local players who have qualified for the delayed Tokyo Games on July 23-Aug 8.

After playing together for more than six years, the World No 11 believe it is high time a Malaysian women's doubles pair stamp their mark on the world's highest stage.

"We hope to create history. We want to win an Olympic medal because no Malaysian women's doubles pair have achieved it before.

"The global Covid-19 pandemic has been a real challenge for everybody. Mei Kuan and I have sacrificed so much. We have been under this quarantine-based training for months and have not seen our families since then.

"We can't even go out. It is to protect us from the virus.

"After all this, we can't just go to Tokyo for nothing. That is why we are pushing really hard," said Meng Yean yesterday.

Former national No 1 Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei were Malaysia's best finishers in the Olympics women's doubles event when they reached the quarter-finals in Rio five years ago.

Apart from wanting a podium finish, Mei Kuan-Meng Yean are also hoping to achieve another near-impossible target.

They want to meet their families before departing for Tokyo on July 17.

"Mei Kuan got married at the end of last year. I have also not seen my family for so long because of our quarantine-based training.

"It has been so hard for the both of us.

"I don't know if this is possible, but we really hope to see our families before we leave for Tokyo.

"To hear them say good luck to us and to maybe hug them. We don't know if this can happen, but we sure hope it's possible," added Meng Yean.
