KUALA LUMPUR: Badminton fans were asking who is Datu Mohd Shah Eizlan Sardik at the national badminton championships in Ipoh yesterday.

Well, he was the unknown from Sabah that shocked national No 1 Lee Zii Jia, seen as the heir apparent to Lee Chong Wei’s Malaysian badminton throne.

Despite being ranked a lowly World No 397, Datu Mohd stunned World No 28 Zii Jia 21-19, 21-14 in the men’s singles second round.

The Sabahan said when he entered the court, he never expecred to beat top seed Zii Jia.

That’s because 22-year-old Datu Mohd has lost to Zii Jia several times in the past.

However, Zii Jia, 21, was unperturbed by the setback, claiming that he was just using the National championships as a warm-up for several tournaments in Europe.

“I was not focused in the match (against Shah Eizlan), said Zii Jia who won the Macau Open last year.
