IT is time for the Youth and Sports Ministry to collaborate with other agencies, such as the health and education ministries, and the Malaysian Recreation and Leisure Council to focus on non-competitive sports, such as aerobics, yoga, leisure walking and hiking

This is in line with the 1988 National Sports Policy, which stressed the need to give equal weightage to high-performance sports and sports for all.

The goal of raising the profile of sports for all is to make sports and exercise part of our routine and lifestyle.

The announcement by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh that the government will provide RM1,000 tax relief to people to buy equipment for 103 types of sports is a good start.

In nurturing a healthier, more active Malaysia, key players and stakeholders must take a leading role.

Imagine the impact of seeing our leaders sweat it out in parks or joining in hikes. This not only inspires but also normalises physical activity.

For example, Yeoh and former primary industries minister Teresa Kok were often seen walking up Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.

The government should invest in sports and recreational facilities and, in the process, alleviate pressure on the healthcare sector by promoting a healthier populace.

Voluntary groups play a crucial role in promoting senior engagement and wellbeing. But it's not just about individuals and families, it's also about fostering a supportive ecosystem.

Collaboration with medical professionals, educators, local authorities and community organisations will promote a holistic approach to health and wellbeing.

By leveraging the expertise and resources of these stakeholders, we can create an environment that nurtures physical activity and social connection.
