LETTERS: Road crashes are the fourth-highest cause of fatalities in Malaysia as more than 6,000 people die each year on our roads. Not many people bat an eye at these numbers.

Traffic accidents can happen due to recklessness. It is how fast you can react and control your vehicle in a situation. You can go slow and still be involved in an accident.

Factors that contribute to accidents are road conditions, poor lighting, adverse weather conditions, sharp corners, slippery roads and lack of signages.

The roadworthiness of vehicles can also cause accidents, such as worn-out brake pads or tyres, faulty indicator lights and vehicles not being serviced regularly.

Lastly, human factors also contribute to accidents, such as driving recklessly, driving while feeling sleepy, poor coordination and judgment, not giving proper signals, not following road rules, driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding.

If road conditions and roadworthiness of vehicles are at the optimum point, human factors determine the cause of accidents.

Many who drive to work in the morning rush to get to work on time.

Plan your journey, leave early, do not rush and, most importantly, do not drive recklessly. Think of your loved ones as you drive and avoid speeding.

Speeding coupled with recklessness can lead to deaths and misery.
