LETTERS: In the wake of recent reports from Miri, where 14 employers were found to have violated labour laws, it is imperative to emphasise the importance of employers complying with labour regulations.

The Employment Act 1955 (Amendment) 2022 for the peninsular and Labuan, and the Sarawak and Sabah Labour Ordinances serves as the backbone for safeguarding workers' rights.

The Labour Department, responsible for enforcing laws across the country, has made good efforts with operations like the recent Op Restologi, led by the Sarawak office.

During the operation, 47 violation notices were issued and five cases were opened for investigation.

Sarawak Labour Department director Awang Raduan Awang Omar said the operation focused on restaurants and reflexology centres, especially those employing night workers.

The operation checked wage payments, working hours, leave entitlement and the employment of non-residents, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of employers' adherence to labour laws.

Such impromptu checks play a pivotal role in not only safeguarding the fundamental rights of employees, but also in cultivating a culture of strict compliance with labour laws, ultimately shaping workplaces that are fair and equal.

Through regular inspections, the Labour Department will reinforce the importance of adhering to regulations.

It is crucial for employers across Malaysia to recognise the Labour Department's vital role in upholding the integrity of the workforce.

Frequent inspections are not just an obligation, but a vital responsibility to ensure a harmonious and equitable workplace for all.

Compliance with labour laws is non-negotiable as it is the cornerstone of a just and progressive society.
