LETTERS: Congratulations to our athletes at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. We won 27 medals consisting of seven gold, nine silver and 11 bronze.

Nothing can take away the sporting spirit of these athletes.

What is most important is the symbolic gathering of people representing the Commonwealth of nations.

For Malaysia, badminton carries a premium interest and badminton players brought back two gold, in the mixed team event and women's doubles.

Watching Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah play was amazing. They represent united Malaysians at their best.

Our top men's singles player, Ng Tze Yong, rose to the occasion to win a gold for the mixed team event and a silver for the singles event.

Ng outperformed the world champion from Singapore, Loh Kean Yew.

Every country is improving in almost every game. Champions of the past are not necessarily going to be champions of the future.
