LETTERS: I read with interest John Teo's opinion piece, "Lam Thye's tragedy is as much personal as national," (NST, Aug 5).

While I respect Teo's views, I beg to differ for different reasons. I am not able to grasp what the writer seems to refer to as a tragedy that befell Lee and the nation.

If it is political, then Lee was out of it long ago and he has not regretted it. If it was a tragedy for the nation, I am not able to see that as well.

On the contrary, it was a gain for the nation, as freed from political stigma, Lee was and is being used in non-governmental organisations that cut across racial, religious and cultural lines.

It was only after quitting politics that he had a larger following, and was able to earn the love, admiration and appreciation from people of all walks of life.

The list of awards conferred on him is commendable.

That a sultan launched his biography speaks volumes of the recognition that he has received from the highest echelon in Malaysia.

Viewed in this light, Lee has emerged victorious after leaving politics and it is a gain for the nation, which has made the fullest use of him.

Many Malaysians feel his achievements are unparalleled.

I read his biography, which mentions in passing the reason as to why he quit politics, and we have to respect him for his decision.

Except for Chapter 3 of his book, the rest is about his services to organisations and the nation, focusing on safety, health and the environment.

Furthermore, for more than 50 years, he never uttered a word against his party, DAP.

That he donated the proceeds from the sale of his book to charity is not only commendable, but also speaks well of his heart.

Racial polarisation is an uphill challenge for every leader in this country, and he merely shared his views and concerns about unity and other ills in society.

Whatever he said in the past till now was done in the interest of the community and the nation.

I see the entire episode as "Lam Thye's victory is as much personal as national".
