LETTERS: Recent events indicate an urgent need to protect the integrity of judiciary and ensure that outsiders do not interfere or attempt to use the judiciary to intimidate and threaten political opponents and for political gain.

An integral part of democracy is the separation of powers among the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary. If this basic principle is violated we will lose much respect on the international stage.

It is heartening to note that there is presently a public outcry by young brave Malaysians willing to voice their opinions without fear or favour. Artistes of varying genres are doing a good job of expressing the frustrations of the people and I commend their ingenious efforts.

It is also interesting to note the outcry from highly educated and intelligent women who are coming out strongly to the forefront in the fight for better and fair governance for all Malaysians.

A particularly urgent need is to create a law against party hopping with a mandatory jail sentence for violators. Most Malaysians vote for a political party and not for a particular individual.

Political party leaders have to ensure that those chosen to stand for elections have a proven track record of community service and possess sound academic or professional qualifications from respected universities or established corporate entities.

Honesty, integrity and freedom from corruption charges are of course basic. We are sick and tired of the behaviour and statements from elected individuals making embarrassing jokes and showing greed, selfishness and foolishness.

These difficult times may well be an opportunity for us to reflect on the events that went horribly wrong. Let's make these difficult times a learning opportunity to move away from our previous practices and allow for young vibrant leaders and more women participation, based on merit, to take up the challenges faced by this culturally diverse nation.

To those taking risks and fighting for change, keep up the good work! May God bless this beautiful nation.
