PASIR MAS: Pas is preparing for the possibility of by-elections following the approval by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to amend Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's (Bersatu) constitution.

Pas information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the by-elections might be held in the six constituencies where Bersatu members of parliament had expressed support for the government.

"For me, the best solution is to hold by-elections in these constituencies, including three in Kelantan.

"On behalf of Pas, l would like to congratulate Bersatu for the approval of the amendment of its constitution by the RoS.

"This is a step forward for Bersatu and Pas is ready to help the party.

"God willing, people will reject the government this time, and this will also be seen in the Kuala Kubu Baru state by-election."

It was reported on April 2 that the RoS had approved the amendment to Bersatu's constitution, aimed at preventing its members from switching sides.

According to a document sighted by the 'New Straits Times', the new amendment came into effect on April 1.

Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said the party would act against MPs, who had declared support for the unity government, to pave the way for by-elections if they refused to withdraw their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Election Commission fixed May 11 for the Kuala Kubu Baru by-election.

The by-election is being held following the death of its three-term DAP assemblywoman Lee Kee Hiong.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh said the nomination of candidates for the by-election would be held on April 27, while early voting was set for May 7.

Lee died on March 21 after a battle with cancer.
