KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) pledges to maintain its vocal stance in critiquing the unity government if its members fail to fulfil their duties effectively.

Its President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said it is the party's duty to monitor the government's performance as people have entrusted MCA with being a political party under the system and spirit of parliamentary democracy.

However, he said, if the government demonstrates effective governance, MCA will not only abstain from criticism but also extend its support.

"The problem arises when government policies are detrimental to the people, or when there are flaws and deviations in their implementation, or even harm the overall social and economic development.

"If MCA remains silent in the face of such issues, then it is our dereliction of duty, and we have not done our job properly. Knowing that there is a problem but not raising it is the biggest problem.

"So, the key is not whether MCA should make noise, but whether the government is doing its job well, that's all," he said during his address at the party's 75th anniversary celebration.

Wee said he was confident MCA's vocal criticism of the government would not create a negative perception in the next general election.

He underscored MCA's crucial role in ensuring checks and balances in the government.

"As long as our actions are driven by the interests of the people and aimed at fostering fairer and more reasonable governance, MCA will spare no effort, undeterred by any ridicule or oppression.

"If there is any matter that demands our attention and intervention, MCA will step up, utilising the Parliament platform for discussion.

"And we refuse to merely follow blindly. Whenever we observe something amiss, we will speak up.

"My party is committed to offering constructive input, facilitating positive changes beneficial for the government and the people."

He said any issues concerning the Chinese community would directly impact him and he pledged to address them diligently.

"As representatives, we're not mere opposition. Our role is to maintain a balanced check within a thriving democracy. It's imperative to only accept directives with parliamentary input unquestioningly.

"We must also uphold objectivity with our presence in Parliament. It serves as a vital platform to engage objectively, scientifically and critically.

"I'm committed to addressing any matters concerning the Chinese community. Whatever arises, we'll thoroughly discuss and rectify any shortcomings."
