KUALA LUMPUR: Angkatan Wanita Amanah Negara (Awan) has proposed for the government to consider establishing a fixed parliamentary term to ensure the continuity of the government administration for a five-year period.

Its chief Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu said despite the existence of the Anti-Hopping Law to prevent members of Parliament (MP) from switching parties, which could impact the government's position, the opposition continues to employ various methods to seize power.

The latest, being claims about the existence of 120 Statutory Declarations (SD) aimed at toppling the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"If possible, implement a fixed (term) policy for Parliament, meaning that every general election, the government's leadership is secured for five years.

"I propose that the government considers this suggestion, and perhaps Datuk Seri Azalina Othman (Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform)) could present this proposal to provide greater stability to our country's politics," she said.

Aiman Athirah, who is also Local Government Development deputy minister, said this during a Press conference after chairing the wing's meeting at Wisma Amanah Negara here today.

She was asked about the suggestion to call for a vote of confidence in Parliament for the prime minister to demonstrate a strong support for his leadership.

The proposal for the government to establish a fixed parliamentary term has been previously advocated, setting the automatic GE date after a complete five-year mandate for any government.

This is to ensure that a government formed after an election can maintain the people's mandate for five years without any disruptions.

Aiman Athirah is confident that if another vote of confidence is held, Anwar will still receive the majority support of the MPs.

"I believe the opposition is merely trying its luck to overthrow the government. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has expressed a very firm stance on this matter.

"I am also confident that the upcoming Yang di-Pertuan Agong will also express the same to bring about political stability and give the current prime minister the opportunity to continue his duties," she said.

Meanwhile, Aiman Athirah announced that Awan will focus on expanding its wings in more areas, especially in Sabah and Sarawak.

"In Peninsula Malaysia, we are already present in 138 areas, and there are many more areas that are prospects for us, but Sabah and Sarawak are our priorities.

"Our task is not only to attract more members, including women, but to position them at the decision-making level," she said.

She also unveiled the members of the Awan committee for the 2023-2026 term after the party's election last December.
