KUALA LUMPUR: The government anticipates a change in the figure of the opposition leader in parliament following the victory achieved by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar yesterday.

With Dr Ahmad Samsuri pictured among the opposition parliamentarians, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he could be 'crowned' as the opposition leader after taking the oath.

"Pas is signalling confidence in having a Prime Minister candidate.

"The next step would be to appoint him (Ahmad Samsuri) as the opposition leader, but we leave it to their parties," he said after flagging off participants of the Runhack: Scam Alert 2023 program at Bukit Jalil National Stadium here today.

Pas retained the seat with a landslide victory against Barisan Nasional's General (Rtd) Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor.

The Terengganu Menteri Besar won the Kemaman by-election with 64,998 votes, while his opponent only secured 27,778 votes, gaining a substantial majority of 37,220.

Fahmi added that Pas's victory does not change the composition in parliament and assured that the unity government would continue to support the welfare of the people, including the Kemaman constituency.

"But the majority is smaller compared to Mohamad Sabu, who won with over a 73,000 majority, and others," he noted.
