SHAH ALAM: The unity government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim could be toppled as it is not a majority government.

Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said this was as the current government led by Pakatan Harapan (PH) only gained a popularity vote of 36.1 per cent during the 15th general election (GE15).

Hamzah also said the percentage was low compared to the popularity votes gained by Perikatan Nasional (PN) of 49.3 per cent.

"I would like to remind you that the current PH government only secured 82 seats with a 36.1 per cent of the popular vote while PN, which is led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin, gained 49.3 per cent.

"This means that we are more popular, so let's continue to champion our fight and we can gain more than 50 per cent of the popular votes (in the next election).

"(And) to the government, this is a gentle reminder that with the support of our supporters, the time for change in government will come, God willing," he said during his winding-up speech at the party's annual general assembly (AGM), today.

At the same time, Hamzah also reminded Anwar not to question any efforts carried out to topple the government and claimed that the prime minister had initiated the same thing by claiming to have two-thirds majority support.

"Back when this person (referring to Anwar) was the opposition leader, he claimed that he had strong and formidable numbers.

"He also initiated the Sept 16 move to overthrow the government at the time because the constitution allows it according to democratic practices (as he has strong numbers).

"They are also bold in parliament as they have two-thirds majority and due to this, they continue to pressure our members of parliament (MP) and leaders with unfounded and baseless allegations.

"This includes the four MPs who declared support (for the prime minister) as they cannot stand the pressure. However, we still have other members who are still with us and this means that the continuous pressure will not affect us."

Anwar was sworn in as the 10th prime minister on Nov 24, five days after GE15 due to a hung parliament after PH joined forces with other parties, namely Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), which form the current unity government.
