PENDANG: Kedah Umno is expected to field its candidates in at least 15 of the total 36 state constituencies in the upcoming polls.

Its liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, however, said the final decision on seat negotiations between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) for Kedah would only be known sometime before Hari Raya Aidiladha next week.

"If we (Kedah Umno) get to contest 15 state seats, that is the minimum.

"However, if we get to contest in more state seats, that is considered more than enough," he told reporters after attending a briefing on the election preparation by Sungai Tiang Umno here today.

Mahdzir was also asked to comment on the negotiations between BN and PH on two of the state seats in Kedah which have yet to be finalised.

"I believe the matter is a non-issue and can be resolved soon.

"InshaAllah, we can finalise and come to a decision before Hari Raya Aidiladha," he said.

Asked about Kedah Umno's election preparations, Mahdzir said the party has hit the ground running by forming committees in all polling districts in every constituency.

"This includes state constituencies to be contested by PH.

"For example, if PH is contesting Tokai (seat), the committee formed by BN in the state constituency will provide all the necessary assistance to our political partner in the unity government.

"A similar situation will take place for constituencies to be contested by BN, where PH will provide the necessary reinforcement for our machinery there," he added.
