KUALA LUMPUR: Muafakat Nasional (MN) is a non-governmental organisation (NGO), not a political party.

Its president, Tan Sri Annuar Musa, said MN wanted to play a role to instil love, unity and respect in Malaysians, particularly among the young generation.

"Love, unity, and respect must not be taken for granted. There should be continuous efforts to instil these values in our people.

"That's where we think we can play a role.

"Any Malaysian above 18 years old can join us. We will do the best we can. We did not aim to be a glamorous, wealthy or a party that will bring harm to others.

"We will use positive and constructive approaches," he told reporters at the NGO's new office in Sri Hartamas here today.

Annuar said since MN's membership opened, it had received registered more than 20,000 members.

"The responses were overwhelmed, I had met several eminent persons, such as (former chief justice) Tun (Abdul) Hamid Mohamad, federal constitution expert (Professor) Datuk Dr Shamrahayu (Ab Aziz), Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye and Dewan Negara Speaker Tan Sri Rais Yatim, to ask their opinion on the way forward.

"We have come out with a list 30 Supreme Council committee members, who are MN founders," he said.

The list includes Datuk Seri Tengku Idris Sultan Abu Bakar, Tan Sri Noh Omar, Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, Shamrahayu, Professor Dr Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof and Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan.

He said MN first project was launching a political school — Sekolah Memahami Pemahaman Negara (Sempura).

Annuar said Sempura was a platform where matters related to governance, administration, democracy, federal constitutions, and current issues would be discussed based on the organisation principles.

He said roundtable sessions would also be organised to bring community leaders and NGO leaders from various industries.

"We will also meet members from all states to give details on the NGO and promote the organisation at division- and state-level."

On a separate matter, Annuar said he would not join politics at the moment.

"I never expected myself to be out of politics after being in Umno for 43 years.

"I was the Kereteh division chief for 35 years, longest in the history of the party, but everything has been arranged by God.

"At the moment, I have no intention to join any party. But if I regain an interest (in politics) again in the future, will ask around on which party is willing to take me in."
