GEORGE TOWN: Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow today said he was not surprised with Datuk Danny Law Heng Kiang's decision to quit the party earlier this week.

The Penang chief minister said there had been talk that the former DAP Batu Lancang assemblyman had wanted to leave DAP.

Chow said Law had never discussed his decision to quit with him.

"As such, I don't know the reason behind his resignation. I can just speculate based on what was in the news but he knows better.

"Since he has made his decision, there is nothing more to say here. I accept his decision and thank him for his services all these years," he said when asked to comment on the matter today.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Law, 60, left DAP. He hinted to the New Straits Times that he would make known his next move by next week.

He said he had spent 35 years with DAP and was looking for a new direction.

Law was the Batu Lanchang assemblyman from 1999 to 2004 and re-elected in 2008, keeping the position until 2018.

He was also the state executive councillor for tourism development and culture from 2008 to 2018.

He did not contest in the 2018 general election.

Law was best remembered as the only DAP representative in the state legislative assembly after the 1999 general election when the party lost 13 of the 14 seats it contested.

He had held numerous posts in Penang DAP, including as the organising secretary and assistant treasurer, and was also once its state secretary before the party's takeover of Penang in 2008.

In last year's party elections, Law failed to make it to the top 15 who made up the state committee.
