MASJID TANAH: Masjid Tanah Member of Parliament Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said whether she will contest a seat in the Melaka State Election or not will be finalised by the leadership of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

The Masjid Tanah Bersatu Division chief said she was willing to accept any decision adopted by the party leadership, including party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

However, the two-term Member of Parliament has yet to receive any instructions from the party's top leadership in nominating her for a seat in the polls.

"I don't know, it's up to the party leadership ... even now I have a lot of work as a Member of Parliament.

"The duties as a Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department are many and it needs to be given serious attention," she said.

Mas Ermieyati said this after presenting Deepavali contributions to members of the Indian community from her constituency at the Masjid Tanah Sports Complex Hall here today.

The community members received cash aid of RM100 each, besides a food kit for each recipient.

Mas Ermieyati was commenting on political rumours the last few days, which among others said that she would likely give an Umno leader from Masjid Tanah a run for the money in the state polls.

On whether Bersatu leadership had asked her to contest in the state polls, she said: "No comment."

On the grassroots level ready to throw in their support for her in the event she challenges the said Umno leader, Mas Ermieyati said: "That's a grassroots demand, maybe they don't like the situation now."

Among the political rumours that have been circulating in the past few days is that Mas Ermieyati will challenge the Umno leader, irrespective of which state seat he will contest in the Melaka polls on Nov 20.

Masjid Tanah Parliament seat has 51,815 voters in five state constituencies, namely Ayer Limau, Kuala Linggi, Tanjung Bidara, Lendu and Taboh Naning state seats.

Mas Ermieyati is a former Puteri Umno chief who quit the party on July 1, 2018, two months after the 14th General Election (GE-14) before submitting her membership to join Bersatu membership in December 2018.

The 45-year-old won the Masjid Tanah Parliamentary seat in GE-13 on a Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket and in GE-14, she kept the seat with an 8,159 majority after defeating Datuk Dr Sabirin Ja'afar from PKR and Pas's Nasir Othman.
