KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government believes that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's declaration of a State of Emergency for Malaysia is the right step to bring the Covid-19 pandemic under control.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the move is a necessity and a proactive measure to contain the pandemic.

"The need to contain the spread of the virus and protect the health of the people is of utmost importance," he said in a statement today.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today proclaimed that a State of Emergency will take effect from Jan 11 to Aug 1.

The proclamation came a day after Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the Movement Control Order (MCO) would be imposed on six states and three federal territories effective at 12.01am tonight.

Yesterday, Sabah recorded 374 new Covid-19 cases and one death.
