GEORGE TOWN: Penang voters advised to give their support to local candidates in the 14th General Election.

State Barisan Nasional chairman Teng Chang Yeow said, local candidates were preferable as they would always be around to attend to the people in times of difficulty and disaster.

He said candidates from outside the state should be rejected as they wouldn’t have time to serve the people who put them in power.

“How can a member of parliament or assemblyman serve his constituents if he is not even staying in the state?” he said at the announcement of BN Pantai Jerejak state seat candidate Oh Tong Keong’s election manifesto today.

“As such, voters should be wise and consider this factor when they cast their votes.

“One clear example is PKR president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the incumbent for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency.

“When her constituency was hit by flash floods on a few occasions, she was not seen at all.

“The same happened when flash floods hit Kajang, where she is the incumbent state assemblyman. She hardly had time to check out the situation on the ground.”

Oh said he hoped to abolish parking charges at the Bayan Baru market and offer free English classes to the people if voted in.

He also hopes to address low-cost housing problems, traffic congestion and flash floods.
