KUALA LUMPUR: Beginning today, international passengers travelling on Asiana Airlines, South Korea's second-largest carrier, will be weighed when they depart from Gimpo International Airport in western Seoul.
According to The Korea Times, passengers will be asked to stand on a scale in their full attire and carry-on bags, to calculate the average weight.
However, passengers are free to decline in the exercise, which will run until Jan 31.
The standard weight is used to distribute the aircraft's weight and enhance operational safety.
The airline said data is collected anonymously and will be used to provide airliners with information on how much additional fuel a plane should carry.
Airliners typically load approximately one per cent more fuel than the necessary amount.
In December last year, Asiana Airlines conducted a similar exercise on approximately 5,000 passengers on domestic flights.
Korean Airlines also weighed their passengers in August last year for the same purpose.
