KUALA LUMPUR: Foreigners are willing to pay as high as RM2,500 monthly to 'rent' a small portion of a local shop lot in areas near Pasar Harian Selayang.

This was revealed by a store owner, who chose to remain anonymous, after being approached by a group of foreigners with a lucrative offer.

Despite the tempting proposition, the store owner declined, wary of potential legal troubles.

"Most of these foreigners are just workers, trying to make a living by selling goods outside regular store hours," he said.

Meanwhile, checks made by the New Straits Times saw foreigners in different stores, believed to be workers, going about their usual business.

The owner added that the number of stores owned by foreigners is small, but never zero, even after operations done by authorities to weed them out.
