JOHOR BARU: A traffic policeman was seriously injured after being hit by the car of a drunk driver while managing traffic at KM3.6 Jalan Pantai heading towards Permas Jaya here today.

Johor Baru Selatan (JBS) district police chief assistant commissioner Raub Selamat said the policeman, in his 30s, suffered a fractured left hip bone and injuries to his face, chin and right hand in the 7.05am incident.

The policeman from the JBS district police headquarters was then directing traffic following a road accident involving a car that had veered off into the right lane at the scene.

"However, during the towing process, a silver Proton Wira coming from behind changed lanes from the right to the left before hitting the officer, who was standing on the left side of the tow truck.

"The impact sent the victim crashing onto the front windscreen of the Proton Wira and dropping in the middle of the road," he said in a statement today.

Raub said the motorist, a man in his 30s, only sustained an injury to his left hand.

"Breathalyser tests on the driver showed he was positive for alcohol, while urine tests found he was negative for drugs.

"The case is being investigated under Section 44 (1A) (B) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing injury," he said.

He also urged any witnesses to go to the JBS district police headquarters to assist in the investigation or contact investigating officer Inspector Kelly Lee Ya Yek at 014-697 7122.
