KULIM: Two-year-old Muhammad Luth Syauqi, one of two young brothers from Kulim who were left in critical condition after ingesting snacks laced with rat poison on Monday, died at the Penang Hospital.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Asyil Mohd Khairi said the boy passed away about 1.20pm, about 24 hours after his elder brother Muhammad Akil Syauqi, 3, yesterday.

"Please be informed that the second victim passed away about 1.20pm just now. The post-mortem examination will be carried out at the Penang General Hospital," he said in a brief update to the New Straits Times today.

On Monday, it was reported that the brothers were fighting for their lives after they likely ingested the poisoned snacks hanging on a wire fence intended for wild animals encroaching near their home in Kampung Padang Ubi, Labu Besar, in Kulim.

Yesterday, police obtained a six-day remand order against a 33-year-old farmer from the same village for further investigation.

It was reported that he was apprehended in Lubuk Buntar, Serdang, on Wednesday afternoon.
